Course: Assessment and Management of Chronic Pain in the Community
Over a third of people in the UK are living with chronic pain – defined as pain that’s lasted for more than 3 months. For clinicians, assessing and diagnosing chronic pain can be a challenge.
This is a half day course that has been designed to help you develop a pragmatic approach to diagnose and manage chronic widespread pain conditions like fibromyalgia
We will explore the current guidelines that support making a diagnosis; review current pain science and how this influences diagnosis and management; explore the evidence base behind treatment approaches and consider the skills required to approach the consultation.

- Better understand the context of chronic pain in the community setting
- Create a framework to assess and manage chronic pain by exploring the following key questions…
- What are we treating?
- What influences their pain?
- What is the impact on their life?
- What matters to the individual?
- How do I approach the patient?
Learning structure
This will be an interactive teaching approach making use of short presentations and working in small groups to enhance learning alongside plenty of opportunity for discussion.
Delegates will be encouraged to share their own experiences and reflect on their practice.
Delegates will be issued a pdf copy of the slide set with reference materials and a template to record reflections.
